Whether it is controlling navigation, weather or telecommunication satellites from the ground, or precisely monitoring the course of an interplanetary space probe, the systems used need to be highly reliable. The orientation and orbits of satellites and spacecraft need to be known at all times, even where these bodies may be travelling at high speeds at great distance from the Earth, so that safe, exact and fuel-efficient manoeuvres can be performed.
